The Battle of Uhud

At Uhud the Muslims prevailed early, then suffered reversal when the archers left their post. Hamza was martyred and the Prophet ﷺ was wounded. The Qur'an drew out the lessons of obedience, steadfastness and reliance on Allah.

Occasion of revelation

"When you left your family in the morning to post the believers for battle"

وَإِذۡ غَدَوۡتَ مِنۡ أَهۡلِكَ تُبَوِّئُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ مَقَٰعِدَ لِلۡقِتَالِۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

And [remember] when you, [O Muhammad], left your family in the morning to post the believers at their stations for the battle [of Uhud] - and Allah is Hearing and Knowing

"Do not weaken and do not grieve: you will be superior if you are believers"

وَلَا تَهِنُواْ وَلَا تَحۡزَنُواْ وَأَنتُمُ ٱلۡأَعۡلَوۡنَ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers
